Long road trips can be a big hassle, especially when you’ve got a couple of kids in the backseat fighting with each other, and they’ll definitely need some distractions like coloring books, crayons, and coloring pages. Average eight hours a day of driving and negotiation with the kids to stay calm in the backseat and its enough to make you not only stressed out, but even sick.

So prepare ahead of time and make sure that you’ve got enough distractions for the kids so that the trip will be uneventful in terms of fighting. And it’s probably best to make sure that both sets are exactly the same so that they don’t get into an argument over the perception that Billy’s coloring book is better than Casey’s.

Gel pens are even good for the kids to play with. Hopefully you’ll put a blanket down in the backseat so that the kids won’t get ink or crayon wax on the upholstery while you’re driving.

Before the road trip take the kids to the stores so they can pick out their road trip coloring books and other activities. This is an even better choice because the kids will settle beforehand which type of activity is most interesting and the best for them. Tell them that you’ll hold onto the items until the road trip and they’ll spend the time until the trip in anticipation of playing with their new toys. They’ll be that much more likely to stay involved with their coloring books and crayons on the trip rather than on each other, so you’ll be that much more relaxed while on the drive.
